Real Madrid Beats Liverpool 1-0, Win 14th Champions League

May 28, 2022 5:34 PM

Real Madrid have defeated Liverpool 1-0 to win their 14th Champions League in club history.

Vinícius Júnior's goal in the 59th minute was enough for Real Madrid as Thibaut Courtois was unflappable in goal. Liverpool had 24 shots and nine on goal compared to just four total shots and two on target for Real Madrid.

Real Madrid advanced to the final by way of a thrilling comeback win over Manchester City.

Real Madrid most recently won the Champions League in 2018 when they also beat Liverpool, culminating three straight titles. Real Madrid has now won five Champions League trophies over the past nine years.

Arsenal Likely Out Of Top-4 Following Loss At Newcastle

May 17, 2022 7:46 AM

Arsenal's 3-0 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur and Monday's 2-0 loss to Newcastle United has them facing a probable miss of the Champions League for the fifth straight season.

Arsenal now needs Spurs to lose at relegated Norwich City to have any chance of qualifying.

"Tonight, we have to swallow all the poison that we feel and go again tomorrow," Mikel Arteta said. "It was a really tough match. Normally, I sit here and defend what we have done, but Newcastle were 100 times better than us in every department, from beginning to end.

"It's very hard to accept it. We knew what to expect from Newcastle, but didn't cope with it and didn't compete.

"We were in trouble time after time, lost every duel and were second best all the time. Newcastle probably deserved a bigger margin as well.

"I will always defend my players, but tonight that's a really difficult thing to do."

Arsenal needs to beat Everton combined with Spurs losing against Norwich.

Pep Guardiola: Maybe I'm Not Good Enough To Win UCL For City

May 6, 2022 3:49 PM

Pep Guardiola said he has questioned whether he is "good enough" to lead Manchester City to a Champions League title.

Guardiola last won the Champions League in 2011 with Barcelona despite overwhelming success otherwise at City and Bayern Munich.

"I have the feeling that the people from Abu Dhabi bought this club, not to just win the Champions League, they did it to be there in all competitions every season and compete in all competitions until the end," Guardiola told a news conference on Friday.

"We want to do it [win the Champions League]. Maybe I'm not good enough to help the team to do it. Nobody knows what would have happened with other players or managers.

"For us, it is an honor to be there as much as possible in all competitions. I know that some people don't appreciate what this club is doing, maybe it is not enough but for me it is incredibly remarkable being in the semi-finals of the Champions League again after last season."

Real Madrid Advance To UCL Final With Thrilling Comeback Over City

May 4, 2022 9:24 PM

Real Madrid has advanced to the Champions League final after their dramatic comeback against Manchester City.

Madrid trailed 1-0 on the night and 5-3 on aggregate heading into the 90th minute after Riyad Mahrez's 73rd-minute goal looked set to send City to their second successive Champions League final.

After coming off the bench, Rodrygo scored in the 90th and 91st minutes to level the aggregate score and send the Bernabeu crowd into bedlam and the semifinal to extra time.

Karim Benzema then won and scored a penalty in the first five minutes of extra time to give Madrid a 6-5 lead on aggregate.

Madrid will meet Liverpool at the Stade de France later this month.

Kevin De Bruyne: Winning UCL Would 'Change Narrative' For City

May 3, 2022 4:16 PM

Kevin De Bruyne believes Manchester City have to win the Champions League to change the perception of the club.

“I think it would change the perspective from outside,” he said of Champions League victory. “As a player you want to win trophies and we want to win this one. The fact we’ve been fighting for numerous years and getting to the latter stages means we’ve been doing really well. It’s a cup competition and the quality is very high so it’s very difficult to win it but in the end if you look back at the way we performed and I have performed over seven years we have done really well. We have not won it but winning it would change that little narrative.

“I don’t think it changes the perspective of how I look at myself as a player. I’ve known what I’ve done good and bad in my career and I’m pretty happy with what I’ve done. I want to win every trophy that I can get but that’s a hard task. I would obviously love to win the Champions League.”

In the past decade, City have claimed five Premier League titles, the FA Cup and six League Cups.
